Hello again,
Following our session about humour, which I enjoyed even though we didn't see all the materials I prepared, too much talking again! I hope you have had a chance to read the man's account of his Summer holiday (which incidentally he spent near my home, and yes, it did rain that much last summer!).
I agree with some of the comments that humour/humor can be international depending on the individuals and the understandings between them but I also feel that, after living abroad, the typical British humour is rather eccentric at times and possibly difficult to follow.
Anyway, I'm not going to propose any more reading, as I think we do enough, but I would recommend watching some comedy in English, either the bits the BBC and others provide on youtube.com or buying/renting dvds.

Felicity, just aquestion and a sugestion.
ResponderEliminara) Is 'Never mind the buzzcocks' a TV series? Any idea about it is called in Spanish?
b) One of the best (and 'refreshing') romantic comedy films I've seen is Love Actually. Did you see it? In case you didn't here is some data on it (2003, Richard Curtis (Director) and performing A.Rickman, C.Firth, Ema Thompson, Laura Linney, Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Keira Nightley, Martine McCutcheon), etc.) I saw it several times and I think it is a very good film for practicing English and there is plenty of irony and English humour. at least this is my understanding of the film.
The beginning of my comment should read:
ResponderEliminarjust a question an a suggestion.
..... Any idea about how might be called in Spanish?
Hello !!! It´s true !!! I agree whit Felicity, the English humor is very special !!!! I watched same days ago LITLLE BRITAIN, It `s very funny and eccentric !!! It was at Digital+ at Comedy Channel on Wednesday at 21.15.
ResponderEliminarI used to watch other comedy, IT CROWD, is very funny more over for those who work with computers!!!!!!I think that is old so you must watch in youtube, but in the same channel, on monday morning my daugther watched it last week, Well, of course, you will be working so you can recording it !!
I forgot the IT Crowd, yep, it's very good! A bit odd at times but good!
ResponderEliminarNever mind the buzzcocks is a weekly 'pop quiz' which nobody seems to take seriously. They have the host, two team captains and some Z-list celebrities usually, but it can be extremely funny.
Oh, I forgot to answer the question... I have no idea if there is a translation but it is quite partivular to current affairs in Britain so I don't think anybody would try translating it!
ResponderEliminarAnother one I forgot to put was Curb Your Enthusiasm which is American, funny in a funny way!
And yes, Love Actually is a great film and a good film to learn with, and easy to watch again and again if you like it!
Hello,
ResponderEliminarHave you ever seen a tv programme called "top gear". It is a car's programme but it is so funny!!! they pull the american's leg at every time!
this is one things that i miss from UK.
about British humour... i think it goes with the personality...that could be influenced by the weather... what do you think about this?
greetinnnngs from stressland!

Hello Felicity
ResponderEliminarProblems about books again.
I was very happy when the Fnac send me a msm. I understood that finally they have my book. Yesterday my daugtehr went to the bookshop, and they apologize because that was a mistake, so it has been impossible for them to find "watching the English"
Today I went to the "Come in" and finally I get my book
I am very happy for two things.
Fist. with my Library card. "Come In" offers to me a 20% prize off.
Second. I start to read the book in the bus, I read five pages without any problem. I trink that I will enjoy this book!!!!
As we are talkimg about "Humour" in class. It is possible to read "humour books" too. I suppose that it will be good for us to read books like "A YEAR IN PROVENCE" by Peter Mayle.
It'a about an English couple thay bought a house in the Luberon area( French Provence) and they try to live as a French Country family, buy it was quite impossible for them. At the beginning they dont undestand French people and their way of life and they live a lot of crazy situations.
We have at home the series "yes minister" and "Fawlty Towers" because my husband like this kind of humor a lot.... and THE PINK PANTER SHOW" too. he laughs in a very ridiculous way when he look at them... for me is more difficult because I have no time to spend looking at these nonsenses, buy I promise to look at them in order to "study" English....
I promise to write more in the bloggs too.
see all of you tomorrow.

I got 'Never mind the Buzzcocks', with Amy Winehouse. Everything is is in YouTube! Real difficult dialogues (dialogues or just a fuuny mix of words and shouting? for non English native person I would say. I will keep looking for a production using a less playing words language. Series filmed in a style closer to cinema are probably easier for me to undestand. Anyway, watching Amy even when she's not singing it always makes a bit of a feeling of sensual ghoulish. Overlooking this comment is just hypocrisy. I'll let you know my progress on English humour series.
ResponderEliminarHello everybody! I don't have much time today... Well, I was ill during the last 5 days and even could not go to work on Tuesday.
ResponderEliminarI don't know all this series, but I saw "Love actually" once on TV and it was OK. I mean I saw it in Spanish and then I could not really recognize British humor on it.
Finally, I just want to add I loved "Benny Hill" and "The pink pantes show" (specially their soundtracks!) when I was a child and I recently saw a film of Monthy Phyton and they are also really funny.
Hugs, Lydia
