Spring has Sprung!

Hello all!

I hope you are all as happy as me to see that Winter may finally be coming to an end! Temperatures in the 20s, that's what I like to hear, and see, and feel!

Anyway, I just saw this article, it is an interesting column and the articles are often good, so I thought I would share it.

The link is
http://uk.encarta.msn.com/encnet/Features/Columns/?article=Accents

I particularly love the part where it says

"George Bernard Shaw probably got it right when he said “As soon as an Englishman opens his mouth, he makes another Englishman despise him”.

I have been thinking about my story but I have not finalised the details yet...

See you next week

keep in touch!
Felicity

  1. Hello, Felicity !!! I´m very happy too about this early spring !!!! I read the article and it is very interesting. It said something that we have commented in our class, the respect of the regional accents show by the broadcasters.
And I think that the article is a good example of the english sense of humor too.!!!

  2. The case of English broadcasters has not yet arrived in the Spanish and Catalan TVs. They still speak with a sort of 'standard' language which is not significant of the complex reality of accents.

My feeling about the sentence : 'As soon as an Englishman opens his mouth, he makes another Englishman despise him' is fun on one hand but agreement on the other. Right here this strongly happens between Barcelona's people and people of some areas of Girona. And they are just one-hundred kilometers apart one to each other.

I'm convinced that so much nuances and differences in accente are positive and beautiful. Different accents are part of the world's diversity which is becoming more and more valuable.

However I don't think those issues will last for ever (optimistic) but they will be replaced by some new ones (pesimistic). I'm sorry because my opinions are never clear-cut (black or white).
